Sakari Kannosto's newest monograph Divinations is available from Galleria Sculptor in conjunction with his solo exhibition "Oblivion." The monograph provides a survey of over 25 years of artmaking by the Finnish sculptor. It includes an essay by curator Maaria Salo.
Kannosto is known for his large-scale serial sculpture installations, ceramic figures and a vibrant, tactile style. His works often feature mythical creatures: oracles, mermaids, mediators and imaginary animals. Kannosto mainly works with stoneware clay, which is a coarse and plastic material. Using fired, patinated and glazed clay, Kannosto creates images that combine elements of lived life, art history, mythology, popular culture and science fiction. Under the surface of his works, there are often ambiguous, environmental themes.
Kannosto has exhibited widely in Finland and abroad since 1998. His previous major solo exhibition titled Children of the Flood was held at the HB381 gallery on Broadway, New York in autumn 2022. In the US, Kannosto is represented by Hostler Burrows. Kannosto received his MFA in sculpture from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki in 2005. His works are included in the collections of Aalto University, Tampere Art Museum and the Finnish State Art Collection, among others.
