Please join us in the gallery on Saturday, March 29 at 2 pm for a conversation with exhibiting artist Graham Marks and his friend and fellow artist Nancy Blum. Marks’ exhibition, For Joy and Grieving, presents close to four dozen sculptural candelabras, each endowed with an improvisatory, cut-and-paste approach to hand-building. The exhibition is on view through April 19.
Graham Marks produces exuberant, coil-built ceramics adorned with vibrant glazes, which combine functionalism with visual delight. Marks taught ceramics at Kansas State University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he was Head of Ceramics from 1986 to 1992. His work is held by numerous public institutions, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Everson Museum, the Museum of Art and Design, and the Stedelijk Museum.
Brooklyn-based artist Nancy Blum is well known for her public art commissions, including for New York City’s MTA Arts in Transit program, for which she created a suite of large-scale botanically themed mosaics. Blum’s drawings and sculptures are represented in numerous exhibitions at galleries and other venues across the U.S., such as the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the International Print Center in New York, and the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. Blum received her MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and has since become a widely sought-after visiting artist, critic, and lecturer nationwide.
